I knew Asahi Super Dry was the popular beer in Japan but I didn’t think they would be in first place. It’s always appeared to me that most places served Kirin beer….interesting……What’s also interesting is that when you go to a restaurant or bar in Japan most of them only serve one brand of Japanese beer. It’s usually either Kirin, Sapporo or Asahi and sometimes Suntory. I’ve never been in a place that served any Orion beer, which I guess explains their 0.8%. You can usually get several different brands of foreign beers but in the most part you only have one choice when it comes to Japanese beer; which is unfortunate because I like all of them. :-)

I was totally surprised that Sapporo only had 12.5% of the market share. I knew they would be in third place but I thought it would be a lot higher than 12.5%? I wonder if they were ever number one or had a bigger share previously? Are they going downhill, struggling? I hope not……

  • Asahi Beer  37.9% ( 7th year in a row! )
  • Kirin Beer 37.8%
  • Sapporo Beer 12.5%
  • Suntory 11%
  • Orion Beer 0.8%

The same time last year there were 26 “Mochi” choking trips to the hospital and 4 deaths.  The Tokyo Fire Department has warned residents to cut their “Mochi” in small pieces and/or chew it well.  Also, to observe carefully children and the elderly when eating the popular rice cake.
